“Tens of thousands of cars pass through here”: New disruption for 28 weeks in the “heart” of Nicosia

Konstantinos Giorkatzis explains why this is an extremely important and serious project

New disruptions for at least 28 weeks in the “heart” of Nicosia, due to construction work beginning today on Digenis Akritas Avenue, with Nicosia EOA President Konstantinos Giorkatzis speaking on the Alpha Kalimera show to explain the reasons why these works are necessary.

“In my opinion, and recognizing the inconvenience this will cause—since there will be some traffic congestion on Digenis Akritas Avenue over the next few days— This is a project that will last 28 weeks, but its first phase, which begins today, will last until December.”

Mr. Giorkatzis clarifies that the project involves the area between Kallipolis, Larnaca, Protagoros, and Alkamene, and that traffic will be halted in the single lane heading toward Pallouriotissa, pointing out the situation beneath the road.

“Tens of thousands of cars travel right above this roof. It’s one of the lanes on Digenis Akritas Street—the left lane heading toward Pallouriotissa. So, as you can see, while half of the project—half of the pipeline—has already been repaired, we still need to complete the other half.”

He notes that this is a €2,300,000 project and the goal is to reinforce the walls and the roof with new layers of rebar and concrete.

“So you can see that this is an extremely important and serious project, which—unfortunately, from a traffic perspective—must absolutely be started and completed.”

He notes that, for the first time in Nicosia, a single authority—the Nicosia Water and Sewerage Authority (EOA)—has taken over stormwater management, whereas previously, responsibility was shared among ten different municipalities, resulting in the absence of a unified network or a unified investment policy.

“And the result is the many problems we see whenever it rains. And I have said that with the revenue we will receive—in the range of 2 to 2.5 million euros per year—from the fees we charge, we will strive each year to address one problem in one of our areas, so that over time these problems will be resolved. The first project we are launching is the canalization of the Kotsirka River.”

He explains that the reason this location was chosen first is because of the severity of the situation.
