Uproar over a map in Istanbul: It shows Cyprus as part of Turkey

A stir has been caused by a map posted by the Turks in a busy underground passage in Istanbul, which places Cyprus, as well as Western Thrace and Rhodes.

Cyprus is labeled on the map with the Turkish name “Kibris,” while parts of Georgia and Syria are depicted on the same map as part of Turkey.

The map highlights the proclamation of the “Turkish National Pledge,” which was adopted in early 1920 and established the borders of the future Turkey based on the borders it had lost in World War I.

The Turkish National Pact (Turkish: Misakı Milli) is a six-point declaration adopted by the last Ottoman parliament in early 1920, referencing the decisions of the assemblies of Turkish nationalists in Erzurum and Sebasteia.

Strong Reaction from ELAM

The map provoked a strong reaction from ELAM, which expressed its outrage.

“Turkey systematically, deliberately, and uncompromisingly promotes its absurd narrative in international forums, revealing its true colors at every opportunity. We demand that the Republic of Cyprus immediately denounce this incident as yet another unacceptable practice by Ankara, which confirms the revisionist and expansionist policy it is pursuing.”

As the National Popular Front (ELAM), we are taking all necessary and possible actions at the European level, the party adds.

At the same time, “we call on certain circles to realize what kind of Turkey we are truly facing and to stop turning a blind eye.”

There will be zero tolerance for violations of international law and the United Nations Charter by occupying Turkey, ELAM concludes.
