77 cases of liver cancer in Cyprus in 2023

October is Awareness Month
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and systematic monitoring of individuals at increased risk for liver cancer is highlighted by the Cyprus Association of Liver Patients and Friends “Prometheus,” in observance of October, Liver Cancer Awareness Month.

According to a statement from the Association, nearly 850,000 people were diagnosed with liver cancer worldwide in 2024, while more than 730,000 lost their lives. In Cyprus, according to the Cyprus Cancer Registry, 77 new cases were recorded in 2023.

“Prometheus” points out that the disease may not cause obvious symptoms in its early stages, making it particularly important to identify individuals in high-risk groups and ensure appropriate medical monitoring. Among the most significant risk factors are chronic hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), metabolic factors, and excessive alcohol consumption. Particular emphasis is also placed on the prevention of viral hepatitis, as there is an effective vaccine for hepatitis B, while hepatitis C can now be cured.

The Association urges citizens to educate themselves about liver health and risk factors and not to neglect prevention and medical follow-up, especially if they belong to high-risk groups. At the same time, it notes that through awareness and prevention campaigns, collaborations with healthcare professionals and institutional bodies, and participation in European initiatives, it is working toward early diagnosis and ensuring timely and equitable access for patients to quality health services and appropriate treatment.
