Cypriot television is entering a new era as of October 10, since private television channels will be broadcast exclusively via the new frequencies and the EuropeanDVB-T2, following the expiration of the extension granted this summer.
Please note that in order for viewers to continue watching television from the private channels that are broadcasting, they will need to rescan their channels.
On the Alpha Cyprus website, https://tuning.alphacyprus.com.cy/, a detailed guide is available, as well as an AI-powered tool that helps users check if their TV is compatible.
If the TV does not support the new technology, a set-top box is required, which costs around 30–35 euros, not including installation. If you have a subscription to a pay-TV platform, the signal will be broadcast normally through that platform.
The Alpha News program and reporter Olga Konstantinou spoke with TV technician Kostas Konstantinou, who explained that viewers should check using the automatic channel scan to re-tune their channels.
From the show’s studio, HELLAS SAT spokesperson Petros Theocharidis stated that until now there were villages that had no signal via Velister, whereas with the new system, broadcasts will proceed normally, and for this purpose, special transmitters and repeaters have been ordered.
He notes that regarding wiring, due to the modification made to the signal, the requirements for good reception have been reduced, adding that there may be cables and antennas that are unable to meet these new standards.
He also mentions that a problem was identified with a specific model of television sets and that technicians are coming to Cyprus to address the issue. He further assures that the problems identified are being addressed and expresses confidence that on October 10, the issues that arose this summer during the first attempt will not recur.
