A terrifying incident occurred during a British Airways flight from London to Chicago at noon on Monday (October 5), when the plane lost 27,000 feet in seven minutes and declared an emergency due to an unspecified “technical problem.” Five hours later, it returned to London and made an emergency landing at Heathrow.
According to the flight-tracking website FlightAware, the Boeing 777 took off at 12:15 p.m. (local time), but 30 minutes later it began to lose altitude rapidly while flying over Ireland. At that moment, the plane was flying at 36,000 feet, and within just seven minutes, it had dropped to 9,000 feet.
It then turned around and flew for about four hours over the Bristol Channel, a strait west of England, before landing safely at London Heathrow Airport at 5:00 p.m. (local time).
In a statement, the airline said: “The aircraft landed safely after our highly trained pilots returned to Heathrow due to a technical issue. Passengers disembarked from the aircraft without incident, and our teams are working to get their travel plans back on track as soon as possible.”
Passengers will likely be accommodated in hotels by the airline until another flight is arranged, as required by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
The UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) came under fire last month, after two technical problems within two weeks caused significant delays at various airports across the United Kingdom and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
