In Como, Euroleague owners and other officials will meet for a second day to discuss, among many other issues, a particularly pressing one. What is it? The NBA’s proposal to acquire the league.
In a report published today, the Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport shares information it has learned about this proposal, specifically two conditions the NBA has set for its proposal to be valid.
The first condition is to receive a response from this meeting. Essentially, the NBA is asking today to receive a response from the Euroleague team owners and league shareholders regarding the proposal it has made to them.
However, there is one more condition. A condition that the NBA is demanding of the league even if it receives a positive response from the Euroleague shareholders today.
What is it? Even if they say “yes,” they must not make any other decision that alters the way the Euroleague is currently run—and, most importantly, the issue of expanding the number of teams.
In other words, he is asking that they not decide to… expand the league to include 24 teams. It wants the 13 teams—plus CSKA Moscow, which has been excluded in recent years due to the war between Russia and Ukraine—to essentially remain, as shareholders, they want to keep the number of teams as it is…
So this means that if the NBA’s proposal is accepted, then in order for the acquisition process to proceed, no other teams will be admitted to the league.
This decision directly affects the Greek teams PAOK and Aris, which have completed all the necessary procedures to join the league, with PAOK, the “Double-Headed Eagle of the North,” actually having a better chance of coming out on top.
