The two individuals who appear in a video posted on social media, in which they are seen beating up a food delivery driver in Limassol, have been in police custody since yesterday.

They are being investigated for the offenses of conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor and assault resulting in actual bodily harm.

The Assistant Police Director of Operations in Limassol, Lefteris Kyriakou, speaking about the matter on the Alpha News program, said that the police were initially informed of the incident via the internet, following the publication of the relevant video.

The police launched an ex officio investigation to identify the individuals involved in the beating, measures were taken, and ultimately the two alleged perpetrators were identified; they were summoned to the police station, were questioned in writing, provided their own accounts, and were released pending a later summons, once the investigation is complete and the case file is forwarded to the Legal Service. These are foreign nationals who are permanent residents of Cyprus.

The alleged victim, however, has not yet been located, but efforts are underway to find him and take his statement as well. To this end, the police are in contact with the courier company for which he worked.

Kyriakou also stated that the video posted online has been obtained and constitutes a key piece of evidence in the case, adding that “it will certainly be taken into account in any future legal proceedings.”

Mr. Kyriakou also appealed to the person who recorded the video in question to come forward to the police and give his own account of the incident.

So far, no other independent witness has come forward regarding the case, while the police are reviewing closed-circuit footage to identify other individuals who may have witnessed the incident.

Referring to the allegations made by the alleged perpetrators, the Assistant Director of Police Operations in Limassol said that they claimed a road rage incident had preceded the encounter with the food delivery driver and that they were the ones who were first attacked on the street by that individual. This attack, they said, escalated the situation, and what followed was captured on video.

However, as Mr. Kyriakou clarified, even if the alleged victim is not found, the case file will be completed and forwarded to the Legal Service for further action.
