Beyond the political arena, the pre-election fever is also rising at the University of Cyprus, with the countdown to the rector’s election underway.
Polling stations will open tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. to elect a rector and two vice-rectors with distinct responsibilities. A total of 318 faculty members, 117 representatives from the departmental councils, and 21 administrative staff members are eligible to vote.
Five faculty members are in the final stretch of the race for the rector’s office. Ioannis Giapantzakis, Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou, Maria Neophytou, Fofi Konstantinidou, and Sofronis Clerides.
Antonis Ellinas and Marios Dikaakos are vying for the position of Vice Rector for International Relations, Finance, and Administration. Meanwhile, the sole candidate for the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs is Georgia Panagiotou, who needs to secure 50% of the affirmative votes to be elected.
The issue is not only who will be at the helm of the university, but also the problems they will be called upon to address.
“There are some issues regarding accessibility to certain lecture halls, many of which are inaccessible to me.” “
“One problem students face at PK is the need to establish internships in all of PK’s departments.”
““The high cost of living for students—because some of them have to pay rent that is quite expensive.”

And as he prepares to hand over the reins of leadership to new hands in December, current Rector Tasos Christofidis looks back on the university’s progress in recent years.
“In terms of research, we’re doing very well; we’re doing very well in teaching, and I think the University’s contribution is immense, whether one measures it in monetary terms—and there are studies that do just that—or in terms of the educational value it provides.”
Tassos Christofides – Rector of the University of Cyprus
And he conveys the message that the strength of any university lies in its students and alumni. With his eyes now set on the future, he expressed his hope that each new generation of graduates will feel even greater pride in their academic institution, year after year.
