New ID cards: How the process is proceeding following the decision on parents’ names

New update from the Ministry of the Interior
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Following the decisions taken and announced on July 31, 2026, regarding the new biometric ID cards, and taking into account the objections and reservations raised by a segment of the public, as well as the positions of political parties regarding the omission of parents’ names, the Population Registry Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior announces that it is in constant communication with the contractor regarding the necessary technical adjustments to the ID card issuance system.

In mid-September, the Minister of the Interior was informed by the contractor that the process of technically adapting the system had already begun, so that citizens can choose whether they wish to have their parents’ full names printed on their ID cards. According to the company’s update, the process is expected to be completed within two months and, at the latest, by the end of November.

Please note that citizens who have already obtained an ID card without their parents’ names listed and wish to have them included will be able, once the technical adjustments to the system are complete, submit their ID cards to the Citizen Service Centers, Citizen Centers, or District Administrations to have it replaced free of charge.

The Ministry of the Interior will issue a further update immediately after the technical adjustment of the system is completed, with all the necessary information regarding the process for replacing ID cards that have already been issued without the parents’ full names listed, for those who wish to do so.
