The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is participating in the MED9 Summit of the leaders of the nine Mediterranean member states of the European Union, held in Split, Croatia.
The President of the Republic was welcomed by the Prime Minister of Croatia, Mr. Andrej Plenković, who is hosting this year’s Summit, followed by the customary group photo of the leaders.
The first thematic discussion of the Summit is dedicated to preparations for the October European Council, with the participation of the President of the European Council, Mr. António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen.
Among the items on the agenda is Europe’s energy security, an issue of immediate priority for Mediterranean countries, which are called upon to play a key role in ensuring the Union’s energy sufficiency. In this context, Cyprus consistently contributes to the formulation of common European responses, drawing on its position as a Member State at the southeastern edge of the Union and the experience gained during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU.
