In a thrilling finish, AEK managed to defeat Vilpas 95-93 at Sunel Arena in the BCL opener.
Dragan Sakota’s team came close to a major upset, struggling defensively and trailing the Finnish champions by three points in the final minute. However, a clutch three-pointer by Frank Bartley and a fast-break basket by Thomas Heurtel with 1.5 seconds left sealed the dramatic comeback.
Last year’s MVP led the way with 27 points, followed by the French point guard with 9 points and 6 assists. Landers Noley scored 12 points, and Nelly Joseph added 14. The absences of Williams, Brown, and Fizel were a factor. Leland Walker was unstoppable for Vilpas with 28 points and 7 assists, but missed a three-pointer at the end.
Quarter scores: 24-24, 49-44, 66-71, 95-93.
