Fierce Russian bombardment in Ukraine leaves 28 dead and hundreds injured

"It was Putin's 'gift' for his birthday," Zelenskyy said sarcastically

At least 28 people, including five children, were killed and another 118 were injured in various parts of Ukraine during Russian airstrikes yesterday, Wednesday, according to reports in the Ukrainian press and statements from the authorities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced Moscow’s forces for deliberately targeting “ordinary cities, ordinary life,” using missiles “against our people, our children,” “deliberately choosing to sow utter terror,” and pointedly referred to a “gift” for Russian President Vladimir Putin on his 74th birthday.

The head of state spoke of an attack involving “a total of 70 missiles, including many ballistic missiles,” which are more difficult to intercept, and dozens of unmanned aerial attack systems across 12 regions.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported yesterday morning that it had intercepted 5 ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles, and 117 drones, including 38 jet-powered ones.

According to Mr. Zelenskyy, among the “main” targets were “our energy infrastructure.” Much of Kyiv remained without power last night.

As winter approaches, Ukrainian authorities are expressing concern that the scenario of 2025 could repeat itself, when Russian armed forces launched relentless strikes against energy infrastructure.

Four deaths were reported in the capital, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

President Zelenskyy stated that as part of the “just retaliation” by the Ukrainian armed forces, two oil facilities in the Perm and Samara regions, among others, were struck.

Ukrainian authorities accuse the Russian armed forces of systematically attempting to destroy the country’s infrastructure because, according to them, they are unable to advance on the front lines, five years after the outbreak of the war ordered by the Kremlin.

On the other hand, the Russian armed forces announced that they had primarily targeted Ukrainian facilities where missiles and drones are manufactured.

Ukraine is facing a shortage of ammunition for its air defense, particularly interceptor missiles for the U.S.-made Patriot systems, the only ones in its arsenal capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.
