The Southampton “Spygate” scandal took a new turn on Wednesday, with the English Football Association imposing a suspended suspension on the team’s coach, Todd Eckert. The German coach admitted to three violations of FA regulations and was punished with a six-week suspension, suspended until the end of the 2027–28 season, a fine of 28,000 pounds, and a reprimand, so he will now continue as usual on the Saints’ bench.
Eckert had taken full responsibility for the events leading up to last year’s Championship promotion semifinal against Middlesbrough, an incident that led to Southampton’s elimination from the race to return to the Premier League.
Here is Southampton’s statement in full:
“We hope that this brings an end to an unpleasant chapter in our history, and measures have been taken to ensure that such errors of judgment are never repeated at our club. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our fans for their unconditional support throughout this process. Our fan base is second to none, and we are excited to move forward together toward a bright future.”
