The ministry of the interior responds: How will the police find the parent if the child’s ID does not list the parent’s name?

When will the option to list parents' names be "restored"?

Everything is expected to be ready by the end of November for the optional reinstatement of parents' names on the new ID cards, with the Ministry of the Interior explaining that this will be a matter of choice and addressing public concerns.

Speaking on the Alpha News program, Press Officer Margarita Kyriakou explained that the Ministry is in contact with the contractor, which has provided a two-month timeline to complete the necessary changes to the system, expected to be finished by the end of November.

“We are waiting; as soon as this technical adjustment is completed, we will inform the public so that those who wish to do so, those who have obtained the new ID card without their parents’ information and wish to have that information included on their ID card, can come in to have their ID card replaced, which, as we said, will be done at no additional cost to citizens.”

Following the changes to the system, citizens will have the option to choose whether or not they want their parents’ full names listed on their ID cards.

When asked to address parents’ concerns about their children who might attempt to travel, and how authorities would know who the children’s parents are in order to be notified, Ms. Kyriakou clarified that airports have systems through which all relevant information is visible, even if it may not appear on the ID card.

“In other words, if a child is traveling, for example, with only one parent, the parent accompanying the child must carry a statement confirming that the other parent consents to the trip, which is a document that all parents who are not both traveling with the child must provide, the police officer will verify that the information listed on the authorization matches the details on the ID card—the same ID number, and the same full name of the parent who is not with the child at that time. The officer will verify this information through the system that displays all the identifying details of an individual, even though may not be listed.”

He notes that passports do not list parental information, but it can be inferred in the same way.
