Shock in Thessaloniki: 53-year-old woman suffered acid burns during a gynecological exam

"I felt an intense burning sensation; I couldn't catch my breath."

A 53-year-old woman reported suffering acid burns to her genitals during a gynecological examination at a public hospital in Thessaloniki.

According to the criminal complaint she filed with the Thessaloniki First Instance Prosecutor’s Office against the hospital’s doctor and any other responsible parties, in February 2026, due to health issues, she visited her gynecologist, who, after a complete gynecological examination, recommended that she undergo a colposcopy due to suspected vulvar lichen, in order to obtain a sample for a biopsy.

As she describes in her complaint, on March 5, she visited the hospital’s outpatient clinic and, after filling out the required paperwork, went to the clinic and was escorted to the examination room. In the room were the attending physician, a resident physician, and nurses, who positioned her on the special gynecological examination table.

“At the beginning of the exam, they poured a large amount of liquid onto my genitals, and I immediately felt an intense burning sensation and pain in that area. I sat up screaming from the pain and burning and couldn’t breathe. The doctors and nurses present calmed me down, laid me back on the bed, and began washing the area with saline solution. They gave me cream and instructions for treating the lichen and told me that a biopsy would not be performed. “Unfortunately, however, the burning sensation and pain became more intense, and the entire area was red and swollen all the way down to my buttocks,” she reports.

As she goes on to point out, the doctors believed she was experiencing anaphylactic shock and treated her accordingly, while also deciding to admit her to the clinic for further monitoring.

“They asked me if I was allergic to vinegar.”

Speaking to reporters after filing a criminal complaint alleging the offense of aggravated intentional injury, she stated that she felt an intense burning sensation during the gynecological exam.

“Once the biopsy procedure began, at some point I felt a huge amount of it—as if a large pot of boiling water were being poured over me. I jerked upright, started screaming in pain, couldn’t catch my breath, couldn’t even speak, and saw the doctors and nurses looking at me and asking “What’s wrong with you?” They gave me an IV drip and told me they wouldn’t perform the biopsy and that they’d give me an ointment to see how it went. “Then they told me I’d had an allergic reaction and kept asking me if I was allergic to vinegar,” she said.

She adds, however, that they didn’t tell her anything about burns and she couldn’t see what was wrong. “The chemical acid they poured on me had also run down the back of my buttocks. It wasn’t until I got home that I saw the burns. I decided to file a lawsuit. I suffered terribly. The recovery was extremely difficult. They told me they didn’t know what liquid they’d thrown at me. But even though I couldn’t see, they didn’t throw it at me with a cotton ball—I felt like they’d poured the whole bottle on me. I was in so much pain; I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t lie down. I wore a dress for months; I didn’t wear underwear because nothing was supposed to touch me. I’m still undergoing treatment. I’m afraid of everything now,” she notes.

A few days later, she claims, she was informed that acid had been thrown on her, which had also reached her buttocks. “The police sent me to see a medical examiner, who told me I had second-degree burns caused by some acid that had been thrown on me. I also went to a gynecologist, and he told me the same thing.”

Dialynas: “She was in danger of losing her vagina”

In a statement, the attorney representing the 53-year-old woman, Nikos Dialynas, noted that “there is a fact—confirmed by the medical examiner—that they poured a liquid containing acid onto her genitals; they were damaged, and she was in danger of losing her vagina.”

She then spoke of “horrific photographs” from that day, which prove the extent of the danger she faced. “The 52-year-old woman has no feeling in her genitals; she can’t sit down, she can’t do anything, and she’s forced to work because she’s a cleaning lady and is trying to make a living. They poured acid on her and told her she had an allergic reaction,” he emphasized.
