The execution-style killing of the perpetrator of the attack that left thirteen dead and dozens injured at a military base in the state of Texas (in the south), which took place in 2009, will be broadcast live on television, a U.S. Department of Defense official said Thursday.
The execution of Nidal Hasan, the American Muslim of Palestinian descent who opened fire on November 5, 2009, at the medical center of the massive Fort Hood military base, “will be broadcast live,” the official told Agence France-Presse, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Details will follow,” he added.
Earlier, in a video posted by an account linked to the Pentagon on X, Secretary of War Pete Hegesez said, among other things, that the execution would be public.
Nidal Hasan “will be shot by soldiers, as he deserves, and we’ll make sure the public is able to see it (i.e., the execution) will be public,” emphasized the minister in U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration in the video, filmed the day before yesterday, Wednesday.
The military psychiatrist, who had been described as a “lone wolf” loyal to al-Qaeda, had murdered 13 people, including 12 military personnel, and had wounded dozens more. His goal was to prevent them from going to fight in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he considered “illegal.”
He was shot during the attack and is now partially paralyzed.
He was sentenced to death by a court-martial in 2013.
His execution will be the first carried out by the U.S. armed forces since 1961.
