In the early hours of the morning, German police arrested a man in his 60s who allegedly shot and killed two state employees, during a routine firearms inspection in the state of Bavaria (south), authorities announced.
The suspect was slightly wounded by a police bullet during the operation to apprehend him, a police spokeswoman said.

The motive remains unclear at this stage.
According to initial reports, the man shot and killed the two public officials, a 54-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, who worked for the Neumarkt district, during an inspection in the town of Bergau yesterday afternoon. He then barricaded himself inside a building for hours.
Among other things, the officials were checking whether the man was storing his weapons as required. The purpose was not to confiscate the weapons.
The police surrounded the building and called in special forces units. The operation lasted for hours. Authorities urged residents to stay in their homes or at least away from the perimeter.
During the operation, the police contacted the alleged perpetrator of the murder, demanding that he surrender, but he made it clear that he had no intention of doing so and would put up a fight.
Police officers stormed the premises where he was located using explosives, and the 60-year-old man “was slightly wounded in the leg by a bullet” they fired, police noted. He was provided with medical care.
Last night, police had initially reported that an employee of the Neumarkt district was killed and a colleague was seriously wounded by gunfire, before clarifying that the woman was also dead. “We assume she died instantly,” said a police spokesperson, correcting the initial report.
