The presidential race began very early. That is the view of the EDEK President and the DIPA press secretary, who, speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” show, emphasized that they are focusing on the issues of concern to citizens, as well as on internal party matters.
Commenting on the discussion regarding the 2028 presidential election, Mr. Loizou noted that the presidential campaign and pre-election activities have begun very early.
As for whether support for Nicos Christodoulides will continue into 2028, he stressed that “we haven’t decided anything and we haven’t discussed anything regarding 2028.” He emphasized that the party’s reconstruction process takes priority.
“Because, believe me, at this moment—18 months before the elections—citizens are not at all concerned about who the presidential candidate of any given party will be.”
On the part of EDEK, President Sofia Christodoulou stressed that “for us, the discussion about the presidential race began very early. Any future decision will be made collectively. Right now, we want to focus on EDEK’s affairs as well.”
Unification of the Centrist Camp
Mr. Loizos Michael, commenting on the meeting that non-parliamentary parties had with the President of the Republic to be briefed on developments in the Cyprus issue, and noting that it had been some time since Marios Karoyian had met with the President, remarked that “there was indeed a period during which they had not met or spoken.”
When asked whether there is room for cooperation, Mr. Michael stated that “there is both ground and willingness for cooperation,” while regarding a possible merger with DIKO, he believes that “it is not just the two sides involved in this particular case.
“When we speak, we are referring to the unification of the centrist political spectrum; it certainly doesn’t just concern DIPA and DIKO; it involves more parties, such as possibly EDEK, as well as the Greens.”
Regarding support for the President of the Republic, the President of EDEK emphasized that the party’s lack of representation in the Cabinet following the summer reshuffle is something that does not satisfy the party, while an assessment of relations will be conducted, with any decisions expected to be made collectively.
“The situation needs to become a little clearer so that we can take a position with greater certainty. But of course, what did or did not happen will be taken into account in any future decision made by EDEK.”
The DIPA spokesperson noted that there are positive and significant aspects to the Christodoulides administration, but also issues that give them cause for concern.
These issues will be brought before collective bodies as part of an assessment of the government’s overall performance, as well as the progress of our relationship with the government.
