The Council of the Department of Educational Sciences at the University, which met on Wednesday with the Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Dr. Athina Michaelidou, as part of the dialogue on the new appointments plan.
During the meeting, according to the University of Cyprus’s announcement, the Minister presented the key provisions of the Ministry’s proposal, followed by a discussion and exchange of views with the Council members.
The Department reiterated its position that a modern appointment system should allow the State to select teachers based on criteria related to the quality of teaching and learning and, more broadly, to the best interests of students and the education system.
At the same time, the Department emphasized that the examination system for teacher appointments should be subject to continuous evaluation and improvement with regard to the nature and content of the exams. The Department stands ready to contribute substantially toward this goal.
Finally, the Department highlighted the limited presence of young people’s voices in the institutional dialogue on reform. This is a discussion that directly concerns their future, whether as future educators or as citizens, it added.
“Therefore, their views and expectations should be given greater voice in the public dialogue on shaping the new appointment system. The Department encourages young people to actively participate in the discussion,” the announcement concludes.
