On Friday, October 9, 2026, a meeting was held between delegations from the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation and Direct Democracy, as part of the cross-party initiative undertaken by the Ecologists’ Movement to reform the electoral law, the establishment of horizontal voting, and the strengthening of democratic representation.

Representing the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation at the meeting were First Vice President Katerina Hatzistylli, Second Vice President Loukas Stylianou, Executive Secretary George Stylianidis, Central Committee member Andreas Soseilos, and Press Spokesperson Elena Lymbouri-Kozakou. Representing Direct Democracy were its President and Member of the European Parliament, Pheidias Panagiotou, Spokesperson Phoebus Doukanaris, as well as parliamentary staff members George Iliadis, Vasilis Thrasyvoulou, and Marios Modinos.

During the meeting, the key pillars of the Greens’ initiative were presented, with a focus on adopting horizontal voting and reinstating simple proportional representation in the second and third rounds of seat allocation, while abolishing the 3.6% electoral threshold.

Views were exchanged on the weaknesses and distortions of the current electoral system, as well as on the possibility of establishing an institutional framework that would strengthen the equality of the vote, proportional representation, political pluralism, and citizen participation.

At the same time, socioeconomic and energy issues were discussed, with an emphasis on the cost of living, inflation, and dependence on fossil fuels. In this context, the absence of a coherent long-term energy policy on the part of governments was highlighted, along with the need to address its consequences for households and small businesses. Direct Democracy presented specific policy proposals that could help reduce energy costs.

Direct Democracy also informed the KOSP delegation that it has adopted some of the legislative proposals that had been submitted by the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, with the aim of resubmitting them.

The Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation views this initiative positively, as its priority is to promote legislative measures that meet the needs of citizens and contribute to improving their living conditions. For the Movement, the key criteria are the social benefit of the proposals and the prospects for their implementation, regardless of which political entity submits them or receives the relevant political recognition.

The discussion also covered the presidential election and the prospects for broader cooperation between the two parties. The two parties agreed to continue the cross-party dialogue on socioeconomic and environmental issues and to further explore opportunities for cooperation. The goal is to develop substantive joint initiatives that will help address the country’s problems.
