New incident involving dead cats and a dog in Vavla: “Impunity cannot continue”

A similar incident had also been reported in 2024

Reports of mass animal deaths in Vavla, in the Larnaca district, are causing serious concern, with residents reporting the discovery of dead cats and a stray dog, amid suspicions of poisoning.

In a statement, the Animal Action Group of the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation is calling for a full investigation into the case and for those responsible to be held accountable, noting that a similar incident was recorded in the same community in October 2024.

The statement in its entirety

Vavla: Second incident of mass animal deaths in two years – A full investigation is required

The Animal Action Group of the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Collaboration expresses its deep concern over reports of mass animal deaths in Vavla, Larnaca District.

According to reports from residents, dead cats and a dead stray dog have been found in recent days, while there is talk of a significantly larger number of animals that may have lost their lives. The circumstances of their deaths are under investigation; however, all evidence so far points to poisoning.

Of particular concern is the fact that this is not the first time such an incident has been reported in Vavla. In October 2024, a case of mass cat deaths in the same community was investigated, with reports at the time pointing to possible poisoning.

We welcome the immediate launch of an investigation by the Animal Police, as well as the mobilization of local authorities. We expect the investigation to proceed thoroughly and for all available resources to be utilized so that those responsible for the deaths of these animals can finally be identified and held accountable.

The recurrence of similar incidents in the same area cannot be treated as just another isolated case. The situation must be examined comprehensively, and preventive measures must be taken to protect animals and prevent further incidents.

The coordinator of the Animal Action Group, Ms. Anthi Mouzouri, stated:

“It is unacceptable that, two years after a similar incident in the same community, we are once again faced with dead animals and serious allegations. We demand that this case be fully investigated and that the law be strictly enforced. Impunity in cases of animal abuse and killing cannot continue.

On October 4, we observed World Animal Day. Just four days later, we are receiving serious allegations regarding a cat being shot in Paphos, a dog being shot in Akaki, and mass animal deaths in Vavla, where all evidence clearly points to poisoning. Is this the European Cyprus of 2026? How many more incidents must be recorded before there is finally meaningful protection for animals? We call on the competent authorities to immediately identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

Animal protection requires consistency, prevention, and enforcement of the law. No incident should go uninvestigated, and no criminal act against animals should go unpunished.
