The rescue operation, which had begun on Friday after the 44-year-old woman fell from a cruise ship off the coast of Zakynthos, concluded with her being found alive in the sea. The woman was conscious when she was picked up by the Coast Guard’s rescue boat.
According to the Coast Guard — the Greek Coast Guard — the foreign national was spotted by a passing cargo ship flying the flag of Madeira, approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos. She was subsequently rescued by a lifeboat and transported to the port of Katakolo.
The alert was issued on Friday, October 9, when it was reported that the 44-year-old woman had fallen overboard from a cruise ship flying the Bahamian flag. The initial report placed the incident in a maritime area 72 nautical miles southwest of the island.
The Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) took charge of coordinating the search efforts. A Coast Guard lifeboat and patrol boat, three passing ships, and a Hellenic Air Force helicopter participated in the operation. The circumstances under which the woman fell from the cruise ship remain unclear.
