More and more Greek Cypriots are traveling to the occupied territories to buy fuel

Estimates from the customs department

The Customs Department has observed an increase in the number of Greek Cypriots choosing to travel to the occupied areas to purchase fuel. Speaking on state radio, the department’s spokesperson, George Konstantinou expressed the view that the increased number of citizens choosing to fill up their vehicles at gas stations in the pseudo-state will be reflected in the monthly reports and statistical data.

He also noted that the increase in the number of Greek Cypriots traveling to the occupied areas for fuel is observed whenever prices rise or increases are expected, citing the outbreak of war in February as an example.

“There, we immediately noticed a change in the seizures we carry out at the checkpoints, where our seizures had nearly quadrupled—from an average of about 150to 200 liters per month at the roadblocks, we reached 500 liters of gasoline and diesel, respectively.”

He also estimated that we are currently at the same levels as in February–March.

Mr. Konstantinou also noted that whether citizens choose to fill their vehicles with gasoline or diesel from the occupied territories is purely a moral issue and a personal decision, while at the same time highlighting the risks involved in such a decision, as there is no equivalent oversight in the occupied areas regarding fuel quality, as there is in the areas controlled by the Republic.
