Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu in the 8th round of LaLiga, earning three valuable points in their battle to stay close to league-leading Barcelona.

Yan Diomande scored the only goal of the match—his first in the white jersey of “La Reina”— in a game that also featured a controversial disallowed goal by Vinícius.

Barcelona, unstoppable, went 8-0 in La Liga

Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the first half, with Real stepping up their performance after the break and searching for the goal that would give them the lead.

The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute, when Diomande capitalized on an assist from Valverde and sent the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was initially disallowed for offside; however, after a VAR review, the referee upheld the goal, as the Ivorian had broken from an onside position.

In the 71st minute, Vinícius found the back of the net, but his goal did not count, as the Brazilian had committed a foul at the start of the play by pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair. In fact, because of this action, he was sent off with a straight red card, leaving Real Madrid with ten players for the remainder of the match.

Despite being a man down, the Madrid team held onto its lead until the final whistle and celebrated an important victory, continuing its pursuit of Barcelona at the top of the standings. It now trails the “Blaugrana” by 6 points, but is just 1 point behind second-place Atlético.
