The award-winning documentary about the mass slaughter of civilians in Gaza prompted a lengthy statement from the IDF, in which they refer to “manipulation”

The IDF issued an official statement regarding “NAZA,” the gripping documentary that reveals internal information from the Israeli military concerning the genocide in Gaza.

The documentary, by Oscar-winning Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, consists of a series of interviews with veterans of the Israeli forces, who describe in detail “the deliberate and systematic targeting of civilians.”

“The film NAZA presents an inaccurate, misleading, and dishonest picture of the IDF’s target selection and attack procedures,” the Israeli Defense Forces stated in a press release, arguing that the documentary’s narrative “is based on errors.”

Specifically, according to the statement, the film omits “the context necessary for understanding the war in Gaza.”

In response to one of the interviewees, who in the film refers to the shooting of starving Palestinians trying to reach humanitarian aid distribution points (which have been described as “death traps”) in Gaza, the IDF stated that regarding the “various tragic incidents involving civilian deaths in or around the distribution centers, additional guidelines were issued [among other measures].”

“The process of assessing the credibility of the testimonies was rigorous”

For its part, the British newspaper The Guardian, which produced the documentary, categorically refuted the IDF’s claims.

“The IDF’s attempt to portray the 24 NAZA participants as low-ranking officers who were involved only in the initial stages of the targeting process is spurious,” according to a statement sent to The Hollywood Reporter by a spokesperson for Guardian News & Media.

“Among them are officers [from] intelligence agencies and military operations,” the statement adds.

“The process of verifying the credibility of the testimonies was rigorous. It involved classified documents, detailed verification of specific attacks, and confirmation through a broader network of confidential journalistic sources who did not appear on camera.Over the past three years, we have interviewed more than 100 sources familiar with the IDF systems used in the war in Gaza, including senior commanders who were directly involved in authorizing the attacks[…] Several reputable news organizations have confirmed the IDF’s use of AI systems in the attacks on Gaza, as well as the relaxation of safety measures to protect civilians, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press.”

In addition to the IDF’s announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated a few days ago that he would seek to enact new laws allowing Israel torevoke the citizenship of individuals who “slander” soldiers, escalating the campaign against the creators of the documentary “NAZA,” who have received threats from high-ranking government and military officials, as well as from far-right groups gathering outside their families’ homes.

The documentary premiered in the competition section of the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize, and made history as the film with the longest standing ovation, which lasted 24 minutes.
