The president of the “Blaugrana,” Joan Laporta, accused Real Madrid of attempting to downplay Barcelona’s successes through the Negreira case. The Madrid club claims the scandal has secured “Barça” favorable treatment from referees for many years. “In
Madrid, they’re using other issues to divert attention. Barcelona is having an exceptional season. We’re enjoying the game—a truly wonderful moment in our history—and international recognition. Nine of our players have become world champions. Our team is a dream team, with world-class players in various positions. In Madrid, they’re trying to downplay all of this,” Laporta said.
“They oppose everything and everyone. That says a lot about a club that is losing its prestige, recognition, and credibility, both nationally and internationally. It’s glaringly obvious: I was at the EFC (European Club Association) conference, and they didn’t even have any representatives there. They’re adopting a very arrogant, very authoritarian, very haughty attitude,” he added.
In early October, UEFA confirmed that it had received documents from Real Madrid as part of its investigation into the Negreira case. Barcelona is suspected of corruption and undue influence through payments totaling approximately 7.3 million euros between 2001 and 2018, to the former vice president of the Referees’ Committee of the Spanish Football Federation.
