Christos Senekis: Targeted aid of €2.5 million to offset increased production costs

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Christos Senekis, in his remarks on Sunday at the 8th Pan-Cyprian Festival of Athenian Products.

He said that to address the rising costs of fertilizers, agricultural supplies, and agricultural diesel, targeted interventions totaling €2.5 million were implemented. At the same time, additional European funding of €4.6 million was secured to support farmers affected by the adverse weather conditions of 2025.

The Minister also noted that the European registration of “Athenian bread” and “Athenian loukoumi” as Protected Geographical Indications is expected by 2027.

As Mr. Senekis also mentioned his goal of reducing the financial burden on producers and strengthening the potential for protecting and promoting Cypriot products in both the domestic and international markets.

At the same time, he announced that the “Cyprus Label” is in the final stages of completion, with the aim of enhancing the recognition of Cypriot products and highlighting their connection to the Cypriot land, tradition, and local raw materials.

Referring to support for the agricultural sector, the Minister noted that the Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy 2023–2027 has total resources amounting to €454 million. Under the Small Investment Program, he said, all eligible applications were approved, with the budget increasing from €10 million to €12.7 million.

Mr. Senekis also referred to the public consultation on the new Common Agricultural Policy for 2028–2034, which began on October 8, noting that a minimum committed amount of €416 million in European funds is earmarked for Cyprus, with the possibility of further support through national funds.

He also said that the Ministry of Agriculture will support the 8th Pan-Cyprus Festival of Athenian Products with a grant of €4,000.

The 8th Pan-Cyprian Festival of Athienou Products is taking place today, Sunday, October 11, at the Konstantineio Municipal Park in Athienou, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with free admission for the public.

The festival features an exhibition and sale of local products, hands-on workshops on making bread, halloumi, and trahana, activities for children, as well as recipe demonstrations.
