The Republic of Cyprus has received a letter of invitation to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), a government source told CNA when asked about the matter following today’s article in the newspaper “Kathimerini on Sunday,” according to which Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, attempted to exclude the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, from the Conference to be held in Antalya, Turkey, in November.

The same source noted that the sending of the invitation letter follows systematic and coordinated diplomatic efforts by the Republic of Cyprus, with the active involvement of European institutions and European Union member states.

He added that the clear and coordinated pressure exerted by the European Union was of particular importance, as it played a crucial role in the developments to date.

He also emphasized that European support has been tangible, with a consistent common position that the full and equal participation of an EU member state in international processes cannot be called into question or subject to unilateral restrictions.

According to a report in the newspaper “Kathimerini,” Erdogan sent personal letters inviting the heads of government of 26 EU member states to the Conference of Leaders meeting to be held on November 11–12, thereby attempting to exclude the Republic of Cyprus and its President.
