Retsos decided the derby; Fortounis made history

It has reached 350 entries
ALPHANEWSLIVE

With Panagiotis Retsos scoring in the 34th minute, Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos 1-0 at the “G. Karaiskakis” Stadium in the 6th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League, in a derby marked by several notable statistics.

The “Red-and-Whites” secured a particularly important three points against their “eternal” rival, with a center back emerging as the star of the night.

In fact, it was the first time since May 8, 2023, that a defender had secured a victory for Olympiacos in a league derby against Panathinaikos. Back then, Oleg Reabchuk had scored the decisive goal, while this time Retsos took over that role. At the same time, the Piraeus-based team has now recorded three consecutive league wins against the “Greens,” following last year’s 2-0 away victory and 1-0 home win. To find a longer winning streak at home, one must go back to the 1996–98 period, when Olympiacos had racked up five consecutive wins.

It was also a special night for Kostas Fortounis, who reached 350 appearances in an Olympiacos jersey across all competitions. The veteran attacking midfielder has made 234 appearances in the Super League, 40 in the Cup, and 76 in Europe, and now ranks sixth on the club’s all-time list. Just ahead of him is Nikos Anastopoulos with 351 appearances, whom he may surpass very soon, while this season he also has the chance to pass fourth-place Giorgos Anatolakis, who stopped at 364.

The match also held historical significance, as it was the 150th Olympiacos-Panathinaikos derby in the First Division/Super League, regardless of venue. With the 1-0 victory, the “Red-and-Whites” reached 56 wins, compared to Panathinaikos’ 38, while another 56 matches have ended in a draw.
