Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights consider the video posted on social media by the “Direct Democracy” MPs Diana Konstantinidou and Yiannis Laouris, in which they essentially accused their colleagues of “didn’t understand a thing” during a debate on neurotechnology and artificial intelligence.
Watch the video in question:
Committee Chairman Christos Christofides spoke on the Alpha Kalimera show about an attempt to belittle the committee members and their understanding, explaining that everyone has the right to speak for themselves or to criticize others for their positions and views, using political arguments.
“However, it is not acceptable to imply that during a session, no one understood anything.”
Mr. Christofides noted that the House is concerned about potential human rights violations and the protection of human life, rather than how neurotechnology functions as afield.
“We are concerned with people’s digital rights. We are interested in the details only to the extent that they affect the discussion we are having.”
Mr. Christofides said that during yesterday’s meeting, Mr. Laouris made it clear that the video was not intended to offend anyone, a point that he appreciated. At the same time, he had a private conversation with Ms. Konstantinidou, from whom he asked for clarification on the matter, though nothing has been done so far.
“The matter is closed; the message got through where it needed to. There is a code of ethics, and when members of Parliament see something negative—in fact, the President of ALMA sent a letter to the meeting of party leaders— so even if we wanted to avoid the issue, there was no way to do so.”
