Niko Kovac has signed a contract extension with Dortmund through 2029. The 54-year-old Croatian coach will be joined by his assistants, Robert Kovac (his brother) and Filip Tapalović, who have also signed new contracts with the team where Karetsas and Konstantelias play.
Lars Ricken, Dortmund’s CEO, stated: “We’ve been on a very good path with Nikos since he took over a little more than a year and a half ago. He has developed the team and is highly regarded within our club. This contract extension is also a clear sign of consistency and stability on our shared journey in Dortmund.”
Kovac and his coaching staff took over BVB when the team was in eleventh place in the standings in the spring of 2025 and managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League on the final matchday of the 2024/25. Last season, Kovac led the club to second place. The 73 points earned represent the fifth-highest point total in the club’s history.
He has been on the Borussia Dortmund bench for 53 Bundesliga matches so far, accumulating 114 points, which translates to an average of 2.15 points per game. No other BVB coach has averaged more points than the Croatian.
He said of the deal: “Together, we’ve embarked on a journey and laid an important foundation for the future. We want to build on that. We have a clear vision of how we play soccer, how we perform as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals. The important thing is that we’re not satisfied with what we’ve achieved, but rather we’re working every day to become better. Determination.”
