German police at Nuremberg Airport called off the alert, after authorities were alerted to a possible emergency on a flight from Corfu.
According to a police statement, checks conducted after the aircraft landed revealed that there was no danger.
Earlier, a large police presence had cordoned off the airport, and the operation caused disruptions to bus and Metro service to the airport.
The operation began shortly before the flight from Corfu landed. An airport spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft landed safely, while, according to information from the German news agency dpa, an emergency code had been activated beforehand.
Eurofighter jets escorted the aircraft
In fact, according to German media reports, prior to landing, German Air Force Eurofighter jets had escorted the aircraft through German airspace before subsequently departing.
According to the German air traffic control agency, the fighter jets belong to the 74th Tactical Wing, which is based in Neumarkt an der Nonau, Bavaria. At this air base, two Eurofighters are on 24-hour standby every day, ready to take off immediately if necessary.
There had been previous reports of a drone at the airport
Operational disruptions at the airport were also reported in the early morning hours of Tuesday (October 13), following reports of a possible drone in the area.
According to the police, three pilots independently reported that they had seen an unidentified object during takeoff or landing, which may have been a drone.
The airport’s border police immediately launched an investigation in cooperation with the German air traffic control agency. A police helicopter was also deployed in the operation, but no drone was located.
The investigation caused temporary disruptions to air traffic. According to an airport spokesperson, six flights were delayed, specifically two arrivals and four departures.
In addition, two aircraft scheduled to land in Nuremberg were diverted as a precaution to Cologne and Prague before continuing on to their original destinations later.
So far, it has not been clarified whether the incident involving the flight from Corfu is related to previous reports of a possible drone sighting.
