A 58-year-old woman was convicted of setting fire to her neighbor’s front door in Thessaloniki because she was bothered by the noise coming from the apartment.
The defendant was found guilty by the Thessaloniki Summary Offenses Court, which sentenced her to a total of 15 months in prison, convertible to a fine of ten euros per day, ruling that she acted with diminished responsibility.
According to the victim’s complaint, it all began on September 22, when she returned to her home in the Toumba neighborhood and discovered traces of a fire on the front door of her apartment. Two more incidents followed, in which the defendant again attempted to set fire to the apartment.
“I saw her through the peephole in the front door, and that’s how I knew it was her. We’ve lived in the same apartment building for 50 years and never had any problems. At first, I noticed that the apartment door was torn and had scratches on it, and then the fires followed,” she testified.
As the victim stated, the defendant started the fires using paper towels and cologne. “I’ve left my home because I’m very afraid,” she said.
The defendant’s son, who testified as a witness in court, stated that his father had informed him of his mother’s actions. “She thought she was hearing voices coming from that particular apartment and that they were bothering her, but this has to do with the mental health issue she’s dealing with. We realized this after the incident, as she had never shown me anything like that before. We will repair the damage that was caused,” he testified.
The defendant did not appear in court and was represented by an attorney, who stated that his client is dealing with mental health issues and apologizes for her behavior, which is attributed to her mental health condition. He added that she is now receiving the necessary care and that there will be no further incidents.
