President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides received both positive and negative responses to the 19 proposals from Tufan Erhurman during their meeting on Tuesday afternoon. On some of them, the Turkish Cypriot leader requested more time to review them.

In remarks following the meeting, the President of the Republic described it as a productive meeting during which they exchanged further views on the three key areas: substance, methodology, and the terms of reference.

At the same time, he emphasized that they are looking forward to Ms. Olgin’s visit, “so that together—both in separate meetings and in a joint meeting—we can see how to move forward.”

When asked about the dates of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy’s visit, the President explained that we have provided the dates on which we will be in Cyprus in October, so that the visit can be “finalized” based on those dates.

When asked about the 19 proposals, Mr. Christodoulides noted that he received positive responses to some, negative responses to others, while for still others, Tufan Erhurman requested more time.

Regarding the issue of roadblocks, the President of the Republic noted that “this is a pending issue; the Turkish Cypriot side wants to see more details regarding certain new proposals” that were submitted as part of the 19 ideas.

At the same time, as he noted, the seven MOUs proposed by António Guterres were also discussed.

As for the decision to participate together in the bicommunal festival at Pyla, the President explained that he had received an invitation, which he accepted immediately, while today Erhurman informed him that he would also be attending.

At the same time, he denied that their joint presence on the bicommunal committees is merely symbolic, with the President referring to the work carried out by the technical committees.
