Trump: The Houthis are to blame for the rise in oil prices; they’re doing it on purpose ahead of the midterm elections

"they're acting really badly"

U.S. President Donald Trump today accused Yemen’s Houthis of deliberately trying to drive up oil prices, ahead of the midterm congressional elections, and warned that he “will never forget” their attacks on Saudi Arabia.

“The Houthis are behaving very badly,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social, accusing the rebels of resuming their attacks on Iran’s orders, following a period of relative calm after the U.S. strikes in Yemen last year.

Trump also made it clear that his warning would remain in effect even after the November 3 midterm elections, noting: “I’ll be there after the election, and I’ll never forget!”

Trump’s post in full

The Houthis are behaving very badly. I thought they had learned their lesson a year ago, when we bombed them relentlessly and—at their request—stopped. They remained quiet for a long time, but now they’ve resurfaced—most likely at the behest of Iran, a failing state with no navy, no air force, with the world’s worst economy and 301% inflation— and are launching very malicious attacks on Saudi Arabia, deliberately trying to drive up oil prices, most likely in anticipation of the U.S. elections. NOT COOL AT ALL. Someone needs to explain to them that I’m not a candidate in the election—I’ve already won, by a landslide—but I’ll still be here after the election, and I’ll never forget it! President Donald J. Trump

Earlier, the U.S. president told reporters that he might ask Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to intervene, in support of Saudi Arabia’s interests.

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have been fighting the Riyadh-backed government since 2014. The conflict intensified after the start of the war in Iran, with the rebels escalating their attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
