The contractor for public transportation in Nicosia states that it will thoroughly review the Audit Office’s observations.
Audit Office officials boarded buses in the capital and identified problems with both route information and bus stops, while the service is not necessarily the most convenient option for people who own cars.
Speaking to Alpha News, CPT’s Chief Financial Officer Tryfonas Hatzichristoforou, when asked to comment on the Audit Office’s findings, noted that corrective measures will be taken wherever possible, emphasizing that we take reports from independent audits very seriously.
“Some of the issues identified by the Audit Office have already been addressed; some actions have been taken, and others we will examine.”
Commenting on the discrepancies observed regarding the information provided, Mr. Hatzichristoforou stated that the app and the website were upgraded last month, and, in collaboration with the Ministry, the routes are now integrated into Google Maps.
Meanwhile, the Ministry is proceeding with the upgrade of bus stops, with the company providing route information.
At the same time, Mr. Hatzichristoforou emphasized that from 2019—the last year before CPT took over public transportation—compared to 2025, there has been a 50% increase in ticket sales.
“Are there problems? Yes. Do improvements need to be made? Yes. We’re constantly monitoring the situation and making changes; we’ve taken five steps forward. That’s why so many people are now choosing the bus,”
The Cost
When asked to comment on the ticket price—which has been €2.70 for a single trip since August— Mr. Hatzichristoforou explained that there’s a transfer option, meaning you aren’t charged again if you take three lines within a single hour.
He added that the fares changed on August 3 and will change again in 2028.
“Essentially, the company has raised prices in accordance with the contract; the contract sets prices based on a budget index that includes four components. One of these is the cost of fuel; it also includes wages. We have followed the contract and have set fares that will remain stable until 2028.”
When asked about the absence of POS terminals on the buses, Mr. Hatzichristoforou noted that “there is no provision in the contract for their installation.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry, in collaboration with contractors in all districts, has begun testing for future contracts.
He also added that through the Motion Card, citizens can pay online and receive a discount by paying €2.
Regarding the frequency of routes and stops, Mr. Hatzichristoforou noted that proposals are being made and that there is coordination between the Ministry and the company.
