The health and safety issues arising from the installation of air conditioners in schools, as well as the concerns of Mitsero residents regarding the potential operation of an asphalt plant, have been documented by POED, which is calling on the government to address the identified safety gaps.
“The safety and health of children, teachers, and support staff must be a non-negotiable priority for the State. No bureaucratic procedure or administrative negligence can take precedence over human life and the protection of schools,” POED states in its announcement.
As it notes, the recent Audit Office report on the installation of air conditioners in public schools highlights significant weaknesses and gaps regarding the safety of school facilities. “For POED, the message is absolutely clear and non-negotiable! The safety of children and staff in schools takes precedence over any other process,” it emphasizes.
At the same time, POED reports that it is monitoring with particular concern the reactions of residents and communities in the Mitsero area regarding the potential operation of an asphalt plant. “Their concerns about the potential impacts on health and the environment—and particularly on children’s health—must be addressed with the seriousness they deserve,” the statement reads.
“The government must apply the precautionary principle, make use of the findings of the relevant oversight mechanisms, and make decisions based solely on the protection of health and safety,” states POED, calling on the government to address “with the utmost seriousness” both the safety gaps identified in schools and the legitimate concerns of local communities.
