“At some point, my name was mentioned”: What Mavrogiannis says about the election of the new UN Secretary-General and the 2028 presidential election

Respect for AKEL and the appeal to DISY

“At one point, my name had been mentioned in New York”: This is what Andreas Mavroyiannis, the former Greek Cypriot negotiator on the Cyprus issue, said on the Alpha Enimerosi program, when asked whether Cyprus could ever vie for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

As he explained, Cyprus has not yet served even as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, something it may attempt during the next term in 2031. This is in contrast to Greece, which has completed five terms as a non-permanent member.

Mr. Mavroyiannis also outlined his goals for the 2028 presidential election, for which he plans to announce his candidacy in January 2027, thereby giving AKEL time to decide whether or not it is interested in supporting him. When asked if he believes he has set “unrealistic deadlines” on the party, he expressed his complete disagreement and explained that by doing so, he is giving Ezekia Papaioannou room to negotiate with other interested parties and is showing “absolute respect because my people behaved impeccably.”

The former Greek Cypriot negotiator and 2023 presidential candidate said that if the momentum and the “apparent electability” he has observed—even if AKEL makes a different choice—then he will seek support from other political forces and the broader public.

At the same time, he notes that it’s not the end of the world if we were to step aside in the event that polls show him to be weak, with a 5% support rate, by the summer of 2027.

When asked to comment on the developments within DISY, he limited himself to calling on all parties and candidates to engage in a civilized dialogue.
