The expansion of the WeeDRIVE school transportation program, which is currently in place in Limassol, to cover students throughout Cyprus, was brought up for discussion by DISY Nicosia MP Charalambos Petrides before the Parliamentary Committee on Transportation.
In a statement following the Committee meeting, Mr. Petridis described the program as an innovative service that provides safe, door-to-door transportation for students aged 12 to 18, making life easier for parents and helping to alleviate traffic congestion. As he noted, the program is currently co-funded by the European Union.
During the Committee discussion, he said, they examined the cost of expanding the program, its funding options, as well as the possibility of cooperation between the public and private sectors and/or local government, in order to enable its implementation on a pan-Cypriot basis.
The DISY Member of Parliament emphasized that addressing traffic congestion requires alternative approaches beyond the construction of new roads. “Traffic congestion cannot be addressed solely with new roads, but also with smart, practical solutions that improve citizens’ daily lives,” he said.
He added that the goal is to promote such initiatives so that they become an affordable and sustainable option for more families throughout Cyprus.
