A prosecution witness ultimately does not testify due to hospitalization

According to reports, the trial of the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Faidon Faidonos, who is currently suspended from duty, continued on Thursday via videoconference and is being held behind closed doors.

Her testimony will be followed by cross-examination by defense attorneys Christos Pourgourides and Nontas Korakides, which is expected to take place at the next court session.

According to the same sources, the trial is expected to conclude before the end of 2026. Once the prosecution has finished presenting its witnesses, the Court will decide whether the prosecution has succeeded in establishing a prima facie case or not. If it is determined that the Prosecution has done so, then the defense attorneys are expected to call their own witnesses.

Reports also indicate that the complainant’s testimony is expected to continue tomorrow, as is her cross-examination, with her giving her testimony via videoconference.

However, a witness who was expected to testify at previous hearings is not expected to do so because he is hospitalized at a private hospital in Nicosia following health issues he experienced.

According to information from CNA, a high-ranking officer of the Cyprus Police, who was called by the representative of the Prosecution and who, during the period in question—when the offense is alleged to have been committed— served in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police Headquarters.

The suspended mayor of Paphos faces five charges relating to rape, indecent assault against a woman, indecent assault against a woman involving another act, assault resulting in actual bodily injury, and administering a drug or other substance capable of sedating or incapacitating a person.

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to all five charges. The Criminal Court has scheduled the next hearing for tomorrow, October 16, at 9:00 a.m.
