Donald Trump announced that the scheduled execution of Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of the mass murder at Fort Hood, will not be broadcast live.

Trump’s announcement came after backlash in the U.S. over the live online broadcast of Hasan’s execution. “Nidal Malik Hasan, a former U.S. Army major who became a traitor, is a very evil and diabolical man,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

“With all that has been said, I believe that live-streaming the execution for everyone to see could serve as a powerful deterrent to the world, which would see how America deals with terrorists and scum like Hassan. “However, many very good and well-meaning people would prefer not to see him die, whether through a live broadcast or any other visual medium,” Trump wrote.

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be broadcast live,” the U.S. president stated. He added that the immediate family members of the attack’s victims will be able to watch it up close, if they so desire.

The Pentagon had announced on October 5 that Trump had approved Defense Secretary Pete Hegese’s recommendation that 56-year-old Hassan be executed by a firing squad of thefor the mass murder of 13 people that took place on November 5, 2009, at the military base in Killeen, Texas. Another 32 people were injured during the attack, which occurred while Hasan was a major in the Army. Hasan was sentenced to death following a court-martial in 2013.
