Paphos’s sporting director, Cristiano Giaretta, made statements on an Italian website ahead of tonight’s match (Oct. 15, 10:00 p.m.) against Atalanta in Bergamo as part of the opening match of the Conference League’s League Phase.
The Italian discussed the Pafos team’s experience in European competitions, life in Cyprus, the project, and the matchup against a “top club,” as he put it.
Here’s what he said in detail
On the fact that Paphos is back in Europe: “We’re happy because this is our third consecutive year in a European competition. The Conference League is a wonderful competition; we’re continuing to grow, and tonight we’ll face a great team that won the Europa League just two years ago.”
On his life in Cyprus: “I can’t complain—it’s a beautiful place, and the quality of life is very high. In that respect, it’s like the Premier League.”
On the secrets of Paphos: “Our secret was planning. The project immediately drew me in and sparked my ambition. The Champions League was missing from my career, and we played in it. We achieved a dream, and now we want to keep growing.”
On the match against Atalanta: “We can be a dangerous team on the counterattack; we have a compact and dynamic style of play, in addition to being well-organized. Regardless of Atalanta’s absences, we have to acknowledge that we’re playing against a top-tier club with a roster of the very highest caliber. It will be a difficult game for us, but we’ll try to do our best.”
