The European Union’s next multiannual budget is estimated to be about 10% lower than the European Commission’s proposal, which is close to 2 trillion euros, according to the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides.
“I believe we may end up with a reduction in the range of 10% or 11%, that is, a double-digit percentage,” he told Politico in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the summit, during a break in the talks.
Last week, the Irish government proposed an 8% reduction compared to the Commission’s proposal.
Even a cut of around 11%, however, would be smaller than the reductions amounting to several hundred billion euros demanded by the so-called “frugal” EU countries.
