The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is getting a new look, 94 years after its unveiling, as a renovation plan moves forward that calls for replacing the asphalt with gray Aliveri marble in the area in front of the monument and the Greek Parliament.
Replacing the pavement is the central idea behind the redevelopment. The asphalt, which has covered the area for decades, will give way to a different surface that will now adorn the monument.
The reason for the intervention is primarily related to the problems caused by the material. The use and wear of the asphalt hinder the movement of the Evzones who serve at the guard posts in front of the monument, while the material also contributes to the overheating of the area.
The plan also includes the conservation of the monument’s relief. The marble and metal elements on the back of the monument will be restored and cleaned, as the monument bears the wear and tear of the 94 years that have passed since its unveiling.
According to reports and media coverage, further improvements—including more plants and greenery in the square in front of the monument—cannot be ruled out.
The Ministry of National Defense has now assumed responsibility for the monument’s protection, maintenance, and restoration.
