For a week, Averof Neophytou has declined to comment on the developments within the Democratic Alarm party and on the pressure being exerted on party President Anita Dimitriou to withdraw her candidacy for the “nomination” as Pindaros’s candidate for the 2028 Presidential Election.
Speaking at a press conference he convened at the party’s political office in Nicosia, the former DISY President explained that “I made a promise to my tens of thousands of supporters—a solemn oath—that I will never hurt them, and they will never be hurt by me.”
When asked whether a meeting had been arranged with former President Nicos Anastasiades, as was the case with Giorgos Pamborides, he replied that nothing of the sort had taken place so far, though he does not rule out meeting with anyone.

Earlier, Mr. Neophytou called on the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, to urgently raise the issue of lifting Russian sanctions, as they are causing a chain reaction of energy price hikes and impacting the economies of European member states.
“This is my position as an active citizen and as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. The stakes transcend party lines. I remain vigilant, and I respect my party and my rivals. The cost of energy does not concern only those in my party; it does not concern only those on the left. I tirelessly repeat that we must address the problems of society that have no political color, just as the solutions have no political color.”
He began his remarks by addressing the issues of rising prices and inflation, warning of the threat of further increases at a time when citizens’ incomes are not keeping pace. With winter approaching, he warned that more and more households will be unable to meet their energy and heating needs.
“We cannot continue to shoot ourselves in the foot. Europe must demonstrate political realism, and our President must take the initiative.”
