The Customs Department is on high alert due to a serious threat to Cypriot beekeeping operations posed by the potential risk of the entry and spread of the Tropilaelaps Mercedesae mite, through the movement of bees, queen bees, and related beekeeping equipment across border checkpoints.
In a statement, the association emphasizes that “according to the report, there are indications of the presence of this mite in a region of eastern Turkey, and it poses a serious threat to beekeeping, as it is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle and can cause significant damage to brood and beekeeping colonies.”
“Therefore, the timely detection of any potential movement of relevant material and the immediate notification of the competent authorities are particularly important for limiting the risk of its introduction and spread.”
The Customs Department clarifies that, under the Green Line Regulation, the movement of animals and animal products is prohibited, and any quantities found will be confiscated.
“However, due to the very small size of bees and the ease with which they can be concealed for transport, the Customs Department urges citizens to avoid transporting bees and beekeeping equipment from the occupied areas in order to mitigate the risk mentioned above.”
