Legionellosis is a bacterial infection of the respiratory system caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella. Its most severe form, known as Legionnaires’ disease, can cause pneumonia and require hospitalization.
Transmission occurs primarily through the inhalation of microscopic water droplets containing the bacterium, although in some cases it can also result from ingesting contaminated water. The bacterium can grow in water supply systems, reservoirs, and hot and cold water supply facilities, particularly when appropriate maintenance and control measures are not implemented.
So far, based on the information made public, the source of the infection has not been identified, nor has any further information been provided regarding the newborn’s health.
