The Paphos–Polis Chrysochous road has become a monument to “intangible heritage” following the latest cancellations of the two bids.
As of yesterday, the fate of the project remains unknown.
“One bid was rejected because an essential document was missing, and the other bid was rejected because the amount was approximately 40% higher than the estimated cost.” Evanthia Tsolaki, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Public Works
Members of the Finance Committee, during the presentation of the Ministry of Transport’s budget, spoke of the mockery and contempt shown toward the residents of Paphos and advised the minister not to visit Paphos.
“We express our strong indignation and deep disappointment at this development. We had warned in a timely manner and through public statements that both the termination of the contract with INTRACART, as well as the decision to re-advertise the tender, entailed serious risks.” Charalambos Pazaros, DISY Member of Parliament
“If they think that we, as residents of Paphos, will accept such situations, they can forget it. We welcome everyone with open arms to come to Paphos. We have called on the Minister to come to Paphos immediately for a meeting so that we can establish a specific timeline. Enough is enough!” Chrysanthos Savvides, DIKO Member of Parliament
The minister noted that she had known in advance that the proposal would be rejected and had therefore requested new plans for the road’s construction. It remains unclear when these will be implemented….
Increased Budget
The ministry’s budget for 2027 amounts to €611.2 million.
“It has increased by 60 million, and this reflects the growth of the Cypriot economy.” Evanthia Tsolaki, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Public Works
“The effectiveness of a budget is not measured by the millions spent, but by the problems that are solved. The minister did not answer our question about what specific infrastructure projects the Christodoulides government will deliver by 2027.” Valentinos Fakontis, AKEL Member of Parliament
“As ELAM, we raised various questions and issues that deeply concern us and for which we have submitted either legislative proposals or initiated discussions on our own initiative before the relevant committee.” Sotiris Ioannou, Chair of the Transportation Committee / ELAM Member of Parliament
There was also extensive discussion regarding traffic conditions, particularly in Limassol, for which the available funds are limited to 3.8% of the budget.
