The third round of the Stoiximan GBL is just around the corner and promises to be extremely interesting, judging by how the previous two rounds played out and the matchups scheduled for the upcoming two days.
AEK – Mykonos Betsson
AEK is coming off a heavy defeat last Saturday against Aris. The 30-point loss (88-58) marks their second-largest defeat in Thessaloniki against Aris in the history of the professional league, following the first game on this list, from the 1992–93 season, which ended with a score of 89–55.
Mykonos Betsson celebrated its first win of the season—and its 10th overall—in the Stoiximan GBL last Saturday in Marousi. It was their fourth win away from the Cycladic island—they had a 3-10 record last season, including the playoffs—— and came via a 15-point comeback, which is the biggest the team has achieved so far in the league.
Kolossos Rhodes – PAOK
Kolossos put up a fight but lost to Olympiacos last Sunday, leaving them at 1-1 after the first two games. The match against PAOK will be special for statistical reasons. With this game, PAOK will become the 8th team in the history of the Stoiximan GBL, dating back to 1992–93, to reach 500 points in the regular season.
Following their road win in Mykonos to open the season, PAOK doubled their win total in the Stoiximan GBL with a home victory over Doxa Lefkada Elabet. This marks the first time since the 2013–14 season that the team has started the league with a 2–0 record.
Heraklis – Karditsa
Heraklis lost both of its first two games in the league despite leading by 11 points against Olympiacos and 17 against Peristeri Betsson. However, this is only the fourth time in its 20 seasons in the Stoiximan GBL that “Gireos” has started the season 0-2.
Karditsa, for its part, began its campaign with a 2-0 home record, defeating Aris and the Vikos Falcons. This is the first time in its five-year history in the Stoiximan GBL that it has achieved this, as it started with a 1-1 record twice and 0-2 twice. However, they now face their first away game, having failed to win a single road game all of last season (0-12).
Doxa Lefkada Elabet – Promitheas Patras
A
matchup between two teams that have yet to win after the first two rounds. Newly promoted Doxa Lefkada Elabet, following losses on the road against Kolossos Rhodes and PAOK, will play its first home game.
Prometheus Patras began the season with a 0-2 record for the first time in its 11 seasons in the Stoiximan GBL. Following last Saturday’s loss to Panathinaikos AKTOR, the team terminated its contract with Giorgos Vovoras—the quickest “breakup” in the last four seasons of the Stoiximan GBL and the quickest in the history of the Achaea-based team.
Aris – Marousi
Following its opening-night loss in Karditsa, Aris recorded its first victory of the season after dominating the derby against AEK. They now face their second consecutive home game. The “yellow-and-blacks” have now racked up eight straight home wins in the Stoiximan GBL.
Marousi is one of five teams that began their campaign in this year’s Stoiximan GBL with two losses in their first two games. They lost to AEK in Ano Liosia after a poor performance, and they also fell to Mykonos Betsson, even though they had built a 15-point lead in Agios Thomas.
