U.S. Senator Rick Scott expressed clear support for Cyprus’s sovereignty and the reunification of the island during his visit to Cyprus, where he also visited the buffer zone in Nicosia.

The Republican senator from Florida, who serves on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, attributed responsibility for the Cyprus issue to Turkey and, personally, to its president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for the Cyprus problem. At the same time, he characterized the Turkish presence on the island as a violation of the sovereignty of an independent state.

Speaking after his visit to the buffer zone, Scott emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus is a sovereign and independent state that maintains close relations with Israel, the United States, and Greece, and has the potential to develop even more international alliances.

He called on Ankara and Erdogan to cease their actions, which he characterized as an invasion and a violation of Cyprus’s sovereignty. He emphasized that the goal should be the creation of a unified and fully independent state, in which citizens can freely decide their own future.

He also made special mention of Turkey’s role as a NATO member, expressing concern about its stance toward Cyprus and the other countries in the region. As he noted, Turkey’s behavior should be consistent with the obligations and principles that govern an alliance.

“Why aren’t they behaving like allies? They should act as allies and respect the other sovereign states,” he said emphatically.

In closing, the U.S. senator reiterated the need for the reunification of Cyprus, emphasizing that the Cypriot people must have the right to determine their own future.
